BERLIN CENTER Richard L. Matas, devoted husband and loving father, peacefully passed to eternal life on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at his residence.
Rick was born on July 24, 1956, in Warren, the ninth child of John and Frances Roberts Matas. John and Frances lovingly raised Rick and his 11 siblings in Newton Falls.
He obtained his formal education in the Newton Falls school system, graduating from Newton Falls High School in 1974. He continued his education at Kent State University and in 1978, he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Public Administration.
Rick obtained employment at Atlas Energy, where he was a pipeline superintendent, retiring in 2009 after 30 years of service. He was currently employed as a survey assistant for TL Blazsek Land Surveying Inc.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in North Jackson, where on July 18, 1992, Richard L. Matas and Jennifer A. Yochman were united in marriage. The couple were blessed with their two sons, Douglas and Logan.
Among his favorite pastimes were hunting, fishing and camping at his mothers farm in Malta. He always enjoyed sports and was supportive of his sons athletic endeavors.
Family and friends will remember Rick for his comical nature, his willingness to extend his hand to assist others, his natural tardiness and the enjoyable conversations that he had with his many acquaintances.
Treasured memories of Rick will be carried on by his loving and caring family, his beloved wife, Jennifer; his adored sons, Doug and Logan; his mother, Frances; his siblings, Joann Taylor, Edward (Diane) Matas, Michael (Patricia) Matas, Mary (Michael) Chern, James (Carol) Matas, Judy (Fred) Abraham, Andrew Matas and Robert Matas; his mother and father-in-law, Leonard and Arlene Yochman; his brothers-in-law, Joseph (Robin) Yochman and Michael Yochman; and his many nieces, nephews and friends.
Preceding Rick in death were his father, John Matas, and his brothers, John, Roger and Paul.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2013, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in North Jackson with Rev. David Merzweiler as celebrant.
Rick will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Paris Township.
