BOARDMAN Roma L. Carter, 96, beloved mother and grandmother, of the Commons at Greenbriar in Boardman and formerly of 335 Sterling Ave. in Sharon, Pa., died Saturday, April 20, at the Commons with her family by her side.
Roma was born on July 20, 1916, in Carleton, Neb., the daughter of the late Andrew J. A.J. and Lou Ella Beabers Riddle.
She graduated from Doland High School in 1933, and from Northern State Teachers College.
After the death of her parents in 1940, she moved to Sharon. She then worked for GATX Corp. and there she met her late husband, V.H. Nick Carter, whom she married Oct. 24, 1942. He died on April 25, 1979.
Following marriage, Roma returned to her love of teaching and enjoyed more than 40 years as a preschool teacher with Mrs. Fitzgerald's Kindergarten.
Mrs. Carter was an active member of the Sharon First United Methodist Church for more than 70 years, where she served on various committees and was a willing and dedicated volunteer.
She is survived by her son, Jerry Carter and his wife, Mary, of Boardman; a daughter, Sarah Oetking and her husband, John, of Western Springs, Ill.; her grandchildren, Joe and Becky Carter, Aimee and Bob Smith, James Oetking and Steve Oetking; and her great-grandchildren, Norah and Reid Carter and Abby and Carter Smith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Jillian Carter Oetking; her five brothers; and two sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the First United Methodist Church, 237 W. Silver St., Sharon, Pa., 16146.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Richard N. Carlson officiating.
Family will receive friends at the church at 10:30 a.m.
Cremation has taken place.
