YOUNGSTOWN – Prayers will be held Thursdayat 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick Church for Patricia Ann Kester, 80, who passed away Fridayat Omni Manor Nursing Home.

“Pat” was born March 22, 1933, in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Paul G. and Eleanor M. Lavin Resch.

Pat attended St. Patrick School and graduated from Ursuline High School in 1951, where she was recognized by Bishop Emmett M. Walsh as Catholic Exponent Leader in 1951.

During her younger years, Pat was a cashier at the A&P Tea Co. on Market Street, where she made many lifelong friends. She later worked for Omni Manor Nursing Home in the Dietary Department, retiring in 2011, after 26 years of employment.

Pat loved to cook and took pride in all of her meals, especially her stuffed cabbage and Christmas cookies.

Pat was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown, where she was a member of the Altar Guild. When her children were younger, Pat taught cooking at St. Patrick grade school, helped with the Easter Candy Drive, did volunteer work for the St. Vincent DePaul Society and was one of the original founders of the Bereavement Committee at St. Patrick Church. Pat was also involved in her sons’ Cub Scout Pack 10 group and Boy Scout Troop 10 and the Campfire Girls.

During summer vacations, Pat loved her family’s daily jaunts to Palmyra Lake, their weekly visits to West Branch State Park and yearly vacations to Lakeside on Lake Erie in Sandusky.

Pat leaves her five children, James S. (Liza) Kester of San Bernardino, Calif., David C. (Doug Lovell) Kester of Upper Arlington, Patricia A. (Patrick) J. Canavan of Boardman, Karen L. (Brad) Fitzgerald of North Lima and Michelle C. (Bill Rankin) of Girard; two brothers, Paul A. (Patricia) Resch of Boardman and James B. Resch of Youngstown; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pat was preceded in death by her parents and former husband, Fred S. Kester Jr., in January of 2010.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Patricia’s family would like to thank the staff at Omni Manor and Hospice of the Valley for their excellent care.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to with Hospice of the Valley or St. Patrick Church in her memory.
