MICHAEL G. CLARETT SR

YOUNGSTOWN – Services will be at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at the New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., in Youngstown, for Mr. Michael G. Clarett Sr., 53, who entered eternal rest Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at his home.

Mr. Clarett, lovingly known as “Myke,” was born Jan. 10, 1959, in Winston-Salem, N.C., a son of Henry A. Jr. and Mary “Mooki” Banks Clarett.

He was a 1977 graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School and attended Bowling Green University. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, trustee, usher, and volunteered for many other ministries.

He was a former member of Masonic Lodge of Wisdom No. 81. He enjoyed playing bridge and collecting a variety of watches. In the 1980s, Clarett was a television engineer at WKBN-TV and WYTV.

Myke founded City Wide Delivery Service, which became Myke’s Same Day Delivery. His trucks could be seen criss-crossing Northeast Ohio and Pennsylvania. Through his extensive entrepreneurship, he diversified into many other business interests, which included home remodeling, carpet cleaning, and phone services. He was also president of the MC Professional Company, an election consulting and campaign management firm.

Mr. Clarett was also interested in politics, having run for the Youngstown Board of Education in 2001. He was active in the local Republican Party and the Ohio Black Republicans. Mr. Clarett also tried his hand at politics. In the early 2000s, Clarett served as Northern Ohio Field Representative for then-Secretary of State, Kenneth Blackwell, appearing regularly at events related to election activities. He served the Boards of Elections in 19 counties and oversaw 35 election recounts. He also served on many other community organizations.

Besides his father, Henry, he is survived by his wife, Robin; three sons, Michael G. Jr., Marcus A. and Maurice E.; daughter Astia; two sisters, Verlene (Rev. Alfred D.) Coward and Kathryn (Cortland) Casey; six grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary “Mooki” Clarett; two brothers, Clarence “Butch” Banks and Jerome Brown; and his grandparents, Kathryn Harvey, and Eugene and Sadie McConnell.

Friends may call on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, from noon to 6 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the New Bethel Baptist Church.

“To the entire Clarett family my deepest heartfelt sympathy . Myke was not a perfect man but Myke's life was constantly changing for the better . Myke touched alot of people in a positive way including me . Myke started a youth golf team at Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church called The Holy Trinity Golfing Tigers . It thaught much more than the game of golf through hours of fellowship it opened the eyes of young impressionable kids so that they could see their futures more clearer .
