Jaevin Cumberland had 23 points as third-seeded Oakland narrowly beat Youngstown State 88-84 in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday night.

The Golden Grizzlies made 8 of 9 free throws in the final minute to protect a 79-71 lead.

Tray Maddox Jr. had 19 points for Oakland (16-16). Xavier Hill-Mais added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Brad Brechting had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Golden Grizzlies, who advance to face second-seeded Northern Kentucky in the semifinals Monday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Branden Norris added 10 points for Oakland.

Devin Morgan had 19 points for the Penguins (12-20). Naz Bohannon added 17 points and nine rebounds, including the 500th of his career. Jelani Simmons had 14 points and seven rebounds for YSU. Simmons, a freshman, made four 3-pointers. Fellow freshman Darius Quisenberry added 11 points and six assists.

Sixth-seeded YSU matched its season-high with 14 3-pointers and shot 52.6 percent from the floor in the second half.

The Penguins were whistled for 30 fouls to just 13 for Oakland. The Golden Grizzlies converted 32 of 45 shots from the free-throw line. YSU was six of 10 at the line.

YSU made eight more field goals, six more 3-pointers and turned the ball over just 11 times.

Oakland scored the game’s first nine points before the Penguins rallied for leads of 24-22 and 26-24 late in the first half.

Oakland led by as many as 10 in the second half. YSU cut it to 81-76 with 42 seconds left but Oakland made seven of eight foul shots late to seal the victory.
