Poland eighth-grade boys move to 7-0 on year

On Dec. 19, the Poland Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team defeated the Jefferson Area Junior High Falcons 36-22 in Northeast 8 conference action. Poland, making the trek up Route 11 to Jefferson, took a commanding 14-2 first quarter lead behind four points each from Bryce Barringer and JP Genova. After the Bulldogs’ shock and awe tactics of the first period were over, they were never seriously challenged in the game. Poland’s winning ways were led by Barringer and Genova with 12 points each. Luke Generalovich and Noah Huda added four points apiece, while Jacob Allsopp chipped in two points for the team. Ben Harrell and Ryan Nemeth rounded out the scoring effort with one point each.

Genova, Huda key in win over pesky Lakeview

On Dec. 17, the Poland Middle School eighth-grade boys basketball team won “The Battle of the Bulldogs” by defeating Lakeview 37-29 in a road game played at Lakeview Middle School in Cortland. Poland took an early 12-5 first quarter lead with Noah Huda scoring half of their early points, and looking like they were en route to an easy win. Resilient Lakeview had other plans, withstanding Poland’s quick start and trailing just 14-12 at halftime. Jacob Allsopp’s two points from the charity stripe were the only thing that prevented an ice-cold Poland team from being completely shut out in the second stanza. Lakeview’s crowd applauded the home team when they took a 24-23 late third quarter lead. JP Genova silenced the Lakeview faithful and their hopes for an upset when he scored all of his team-high 11 points in the second half. Huda’s strong contribution on both ends of the court culminated in 10 points. Carson Maurer chipped in five points, while Allsopp and Barringer added four points apiece. Luke Generalovich rounded out the Bulldog scoring effort with three points.

Neighbors wants winter sports news

Winter athletics will soon arrive and Neighbors wants to be there every step of the way. If you’re a sports coach or the parent of an athlete, we need your help. In order to get teams and players the recognition they deserve, we want to showcase them in our pages.

We can only do that if you commit to sending us game reports and photos each week. If you send it, it will get in.

You can email us at neighbors@vindy.com. You don’t have to be a writer — just send us the information and we’ll put it all together. When emailing pictures, send them as JPEG files and as large as possible.

Provide caption information and where people are located from left to right, front row to back. The sports news we’re looking for ranges from varsity high school teams down to middle school and even elementary and recreational leagues. We look forward to hearing about your teams successes.
