Hughes has YSU’s lowest first-round score

Youngstown State’s C.J. Hughes opened with an even-par 72 Sunday at the Horizon League Men’s Golf Championships at Mission Inn Resort’s El Campeon Golf Course.

Hughes, a sophomore from Indiana, Pa., is one stroke behind Oakland’s Chris Handy and Green Bay’s George Kneiser, who each shot 1-under 71.

The YSU men are fourth following a first-round 305. They are five strokes back of second-place Oakland and seven strokes behind first-place Northern Kentucky. The Norse grabbed the lead with a first-round team score of 298.

Hughes had seven pars, six birdies, four bogeys and just one double bogey. He had birdies on No. 3, No. 8, No. 9 while shooting even par (35) on the front nine.

YSU’s Kevin Scherr (77) and Ken Keller (77) are tied for 15th place. Zack Ford (79) is tied for 23rd and Jason McQuown (81) is tied for 30th.

The Penguins tee off at 8:50 a.m. today in the second round.

The YSU women’s are also is in fourth place, and two Penguins are in the top 10, after the first round of the Horizon League Championships at Mission Inn Resort’s Las Colinas Course.

The Penguins shot 321 and are three strokes behind third-place Cleveland State. Defending champion IUPUI and Oakland each recorded a 311 to tie for the first-round lead.

Puthita Khuanrudee (5-over 78) is tied for eighth place. Katlyn Shutt (79) is tied for 10th and Rattika Sittigool (80) is tied for 13th.

Victoria Grans (84) is tied for 23rd and Jenna Vivo (87) and is tied for 33rd.

YSU tees off at 7:30 a.m. today in the second round.
