East sets banquet for Dec. 6 at Mount Carmel
An East High alumnus who played in the NFL will be the guest speaker at the Golden Bears Football Awards Banquet on Dec. 6 at Mount Carmel Hall. Under head Coach Brian Marrow, East enjoyed its best season in years, making it to the playoffs for the first time since 1997. The banquet will begin at 6 p.m. and will recognize players for their achievements. Mike Flores will be the guest speaker and WKBN news anchor Stan Boney will serve as master of ceremony. Flores played college football at the University of Louisville. In 1991, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles. He played with the Eagles from 1991-94, then played for the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins in 1995. Banquet tickets cost $20.

Struthers games to benefit Foundation
The Struthers High School girls basketball team will host a Foundation fund-raiser on Wednesday against Austintown Fitch at Struthers Fieldhouse. The schedule has games for seventh and eighth grades as well as junior varsity and varsity. Games begin at 3:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Ed and Doris Lancy Scholarship and the Bonnie Beachy Legacy Scholarship.
Poland selling tickets for boys basketball
The Poland High School Athletic Department will sell reserved season tickets for boys basketball games beginning Monday. Sale hours are 12:30-4 p.m. weekdays. Also available are adult and student athletic passes for all Poland home athletic events.
Canfield opens season Saturday at Deep Freeze
The Canfield High School ice hockey team will open its season on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against Midview. The game will be played at the Deep Freeze Arena (formerly The Ice Zone) on McClurg Road. Chris Richards, a former Ohio State University and Youngstown SteelHounds player, begins his fifth season as Cardinals head coach. His record is 44-34-1. Joe Villano is his assistant coach as well as goalie coach. The Cardinals play in the Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League in the White Division. Chagrin Falls, Orange, Kent Roosevelt and Chagrin Falls also are in the division.
