Cianciola third in state tennis tournament

Staff report

Tim Cianciola’s final run in the state tennis tournament was his best.

The Canfield senior finished in third place in the Division I state singles tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

Cianciola fell in the semifinals on Saturday, 6-1, 6-0 to eventual state champ Robert Cash of New Albany.

He rebounded from the loss by rallying to defeat Lewis Center Olentangy’s Stu Brdicka.

Brdicka took the first set, 2-6, but Cianciola rallied to win the second, 7-6, and the third, 6-4.

Cianciola has made state three times in his career. In his freshman season, he went as a doubles tandem with Bobby Long and fell in the first round to New Albany’s Nick Blair and Graeme Green when the tournament was in Columbus.

He made his singles debut last year in Mason and fell in the first round to Mason’s Saiprakash Goli.

Cianciola is part of a Canfield tennis family dynasty. His sisters, Hannah and Sydney Cianciola, won a state doubles title last fall.

In his run to state this season, Cianciola did not lose a single match in either the sectional or district tournaments.

Canfield was ranked No. 10 in the state by the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association.

The Cardinals will play in a state semifinal in the OTCA tournament today.
