Hine Memorial Fund Playground opens on Columbiana-Canfield Road

A long-awaited playground designed for individuals with special needs is officially open to the community.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place today at what is now named the Hine Memorial Fund Playground, located on Columbiana-Canfield Road.

The project was led by the Walnut Grove organization, which was established in 2013. Construction began last year. About $1 million has been put into the project thus far.

Today, the Hine Memorial Fund donated an additional $500,000 on top of the $250,000 it already contributed. Those funds will be used to expand the playground.

“This playground is unique because it is what we call an inclusive playground,” said Walnut Grove board President Shellie Duchek. “I think it is life changing. Currently, these families [of children with disabilities] are driving an hour away. Now it’s in their backyard.”

“We’re just excited. We’ve worked really hard to see kids play on this,” she said.
