Mental Health month
In celebration of National Mental Health Awareness month, The Red Zone, 209 W. Woodland Ave., will recognize its strategic community partners at an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday for their commitment to facilitate opportunities for increased awareness in addiction treatment, mental and behavioral health integration, education and advocacy.
Honorees are: Brandon Perry, City Kids Care founder; Jim Tressel, Youngstown State University president; Julius Oliver, 1st Ward councilman; Krish Mohip, Youngstown City School District CEO; and Matt Glover, Struthers Municipal Court chief probation officer.
The Red Zone currently serves more than 1,500 children and adults in north and central Ohio who are impacted by drug and alcohol abuse, low-income disparities and mental illness.
Cancer rehab center
Maple Tree Cancer Alliance, a specialty rehab center for cancer patients, is opening its eighth center on May 30 at the Buhl Community Recreation Center, 28 Pine St., Maple Tree’s first facility in Western Pennsylvania. Maple Tree has seven centers located at various hospitals in the Dayton, Ohio area.
The organization’s founder, former Cranberry Township, Pa., resident, Dr. Karen Wonders, a certified cancer exercise specialist, plans to open centers throughout the Pittsburgh area.
Maple Tree is dedicated to improving the quality of life of individuals battling cancer through “exercise oncology.” All services to patients are free. To learn more about Maple Tree Cancer Alliance, visit www.mapletreecan eralliance.org.
Wonders earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock University, a master of ministry degree from Cedarville University, Ohio, and an earned doctorate in exercise physiology from the University of Northern Colorado.
March of Dimes Ohio is seeking nominations through June 15 for its 2018 Ohio Nurse of the Year Awards for exceptional nurses in Ohio who exemplify an extraordinary level of patient care, compassion and customer service to be honored in several categories.
A committee of health care professionals will review the nomination forms and announce the award finalists this fall. About 24 nurses will be honored at an awards luncheon Nov. 2 at the Hyatt Regency in Columbus.
