John Mashiska, local resident and head of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Knights of Columbus, explained the history and activities of the group to members of the Rotary Club of Austintown at a recent meeting. Founded in Connecticut in 1882, it is the largest Catholic fraternal organization in the world with 1.9 million members. Orignally founded to help immigrants find jobs and provide insurance for working men, it now provides assistance to families in need of social services as well as honor guards for funerals and activities involving church officials.
