Boys track claims victory over Howland, Lakeview and South Range

The Boardman boys track team improved its 2018 record to 7-0 with a victory over the Howland Tigers, Lakeview Bulldogs and South Range Raiders on April 18 by a score of 93-75-74-12.
The Spartans opened the meet with a second place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with the team of junior Payton Torres, senior David Bader, freshman Caydin Newberry and sophomore Jackson Lipka. Sophomore Brian Yauger placed second in the 110 hurdles and senior Jacob Kimble placed fifth in the 100-meter dash. The 4x200 meter relay team of senior Justice Jama, senior Billy Cammack, freshman Brennan Stratton and senior Josh Rodriguez placed first. The 4x100 relay team of Jama, Rodriguez, sophomore Isaiah Suarez and sophomore Rashie Garner also placed first. Sophomore River Flatley placed second in the 1600 with senior Jason Fabian in third.
Torres finished first in the 400-meter run with freshman Cristian Ortiz in second. Yauger placed second in the 300 hurdles. In the 800-meter run, sophomore Mitchel Dunham placed second, freshman Frank Bero was third and Flatley was fourth overall. Meanwhile, in the 200-meter run, Jama was third. The next event was the 3200-meter run, which saw Newberry place first and freshman Anthony Marshall fifth. The 4x400 relay team of Cammack, Rodriguez, Suarez and sophomore Nick Torres placed second.
In the field events, senior Steven Amstutz placed first in the shot put with sophomore David Merdich fifth, and senior Nikitas Missos was third in the discus. Jama placed third in the high jump, and freshman Tyreek Jackson was third in long jump with Nick Torres in fifth. Kimble placed first in the pole vault and senior Mark Moradian was third.
This week’s BW-3 Meet MVP was freshman Tyreek Jackson.
“This was a solid effort against very good teams from Howland and Lakeview and some solid field event athletes from South Range,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “We wanted to rest some of our varsity guys tonight due to this week’s county meet and some of our younger guys really stepped up for our team.”
