Pastor Julianne D. Smith, who has been pastor of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church on Center Road in Poland since January 2010, and also serving Christ Lutheran Church in Struthers since 2017, has accepted the call to serve as Director for Evangelical Mission in the Northeastern Ohio Synod (NEOS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Assistant to Bishop Abraham Allende of the NEOS ELCA.
The NEOS, with a headquarters office in Cuyahoga Falls, comprises the 180 ELCA congregations in northeastern Ohio, and is one of 65 synods of the ELCA, which encompasses the USA and island nations and territories in the Caribbean. Smith has also served as Dean of the Eastern Conference of the NEOS. She has also been active in the Poland Ministerial Association, ACTION, and the Interdenominational Ministerial Association in the Mahoning Valley and served on the NEOS Synod Council. Prior to serving at Prince of Peace Poland, she was a pastor in Ada and Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in the Northwestern Ohio Synod ELCA.
A Director for Evangelical Mission (DEM) is tasked to develop leadership and build capacity in the synod in mission development or “new starts,” congregational renewal or redevelopment, mission support and stewardship and vision and planning in mission for the synod. They also serve as a key resource for congregations and leaders seeking tools and counsel in these areas of mission and ministry.
Smith and her husband Stuart will continue to reside in Poland. Prince of Peace Poland and Christ Struthers will enter the synod’s call process, leading to the calling of new pastoral leadership in the month ahead.
