Playhouse to present ‘Keely and Du’

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

“Keely and Du” will open Friday at the Youngstown Playhouse, in the intimate Moyer Room.

Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and again March 22, 23 and 24.

The one-act play is directed by Pat Foltz, with a cast that includes Candace DiLullo, Molly Galano, Matthew Mazuroski, Brian Suchora and Kelli Young.

“Keely and Du” chronicles the fate of the kidnapped Keely, played by DiLullo, from the last preparations for her imprisonment through her eventual release.

Set almost exclusively in a sparsely furnished basement that has been converted into a prison, the play focuses on Keely’s developing and changing relationship with her adversary, Du (Galano), a fundamentalist Christian who guards her to prevent her from terminating her unwanted pregnancy.

Assisting Foltz as stage manager is James Reed, who also designed the lights and sound. Playhouse technical coordinator Johnny Pecano constructed the minimalist set.

“Keely and Du” won the 1994 American Theater Critics Association New Play Award and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. The play, written by Jane Martin, is intended for mature audiences only and contains controversial material and images, including strong language, violence, rape and discussion of the abortion issue.

Tickets are $15 ($12 for seniors and students); call 330-788-8739 or go to theyoungstownplayhouse.com.
