Akron's Pikunas is tourney runner-up

The University of Akron women’s golf team fired a 309 (+17) final round at the Bradley Spring Break Invitational to climb one spot into the runner-up position with a 921 (+45) team total on Tuesday at the par 73, 6,187 yard Brookhaven Country Club.

Freshman Jacinta Pikunas (Boardman) led Akron’s scoring with a 224 (+5) total and finished in a three-way tie for first place, forcing a playoff.

After three holes, Houston Baptist’s Kaity Cummings prevailed in the playoff to earn medalist honors.

Pikunas earned runner-up and Northern Illinois’ Brielle Ward ended in the third spot. Pikunas led the field by one stroke after 36 holes on rounds of 76 (+3) and 71 (-2), and fired a 77 (+4) final round to remain on the top of the leaderboard.

The Zips completed the 54-hole tournament 12 strokes behind the tournament champions Houston Baptist, 909 (+33), and five strokes better than the third-place finishers.
