Youngstown fraternity to host council meeting
Youngstown Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. will host its East Central Province Council Meeting from March 14 through 18 at the Avalon Inn and Resort, 9519 E. Market St., Howland. There will be several events open to the public, one of which will take place at 7 p.m. March 16 in the grand ballroom. The event is free and will feature Dr. Charlene Mickens Dukes, president of Prince George’s Community College, Largo, Md., as the speaker.
Dr. Dukes is the college’s first female president, and her leadership there has resulted in significant enhancements that have become state and national models of academic success. PGCC was chosen as one of the nation’s 16 White House Champions of Change in community colleges. The college also has the distinction of being the first in Maryland to house a grade 9-12 middle college high school, the Academy of Health Sciences, where students receive a high-school diploma and associate degrees concurrently upon graduation.
Dr. Dukes ascended through the administrative ranks of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and the Community College of Allegheny County in Pittsburgh. She began her career with PGCC as vice president for Student Services in 1995.
She is a member of many professional organizations, including the Institute for Higher Education Policy, the President’s Round Table and the National Council on Black American Affairs. She also is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and the Links Inc.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. is a collegiate-founded organization in which the local alumni chapter was founded in 1934. A few of the programs the fraternity is involved with are the Global Initiative for Safe sleep, Fatherhood Initiative programs and the annual Sunday for Hope which raised contributions for St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Hotel Entertainment — meet and greet from 7 to 10 p.m. at Gatsby’s
Golf tournament from 4 to 10 p.m. at the clubhouse
Public meeting from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the grand ballroom
Post-public meeting reception from 8:45 to 11 p.m. in the grand ballroom
Undergraduate party from 9 to 1 a.m. in the pavilion; cost is $10
Student of the Year competition from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in meeting room 3
Chess Club tournament from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., location to be determined
Divine-Nine gala from 8:30 p.m. to midnight in the grand ballroom; event is semi-formal, cost is $25
