Sugar Shack Shindig

When: Saturday, 1 to 3 p.m.

What: In 1951, Mill Creek Park officials planted a grove of maple trees. The Rocky Ridge Neighborhood Association saw the potential and started a maple project in 2013. Come out to their Sugar Shack to see what it takes to make our favorite sugary breakfast treat.

Where: Sugar Shack near the Morley Pavilion, 1861 McCollum Road, Youngstown.

Maple Syrup Saunter

When: Saturday, 1 to 2:30 p.m.

What: Join naturalist Bill Gilmour on a hike that will include a stop at the maple-syrup making demonstration put on by the Rocky Ridge Neighborhood Association. Moderate, 2 miles.

Where: Wick Recreation Area, Par 3 parking lot off McCollum Road, Youngstown.

When: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

What: Enjoy a traditional Irish corned beef buffet including corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, carrots, Reuben sandwiches, leprechaun fries, corned beef and kraut balls, french toast sticks and Bailey’s cheese cake.

Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown.

Cost: $19.95 adults, $10.95 kids 4-12, under 4 free with adult. All proceeds from beer sales will go to autism programs in the Mahoning Valley.

I Spy Hiking Club

When: Sunday, 2 to 3 p.m.

What: Explore the trails with a naturalist, in our newest children’s hiking series inspired by the “I Spy” books written by Jean Marzollo and photographed by Walter Wick.

Where: Ford Nature Center, 840 Old Furnace Road, Youngstown.

Cost: $9 for the series or $4 for the class.

Details: For people 6 and older. Register and pay at FNC by Friday.

When: Monday, 1 to 3 p.m.

What: Learn how easy it is to bring some of that sunshine into your winter days. We will cover at least three methods on how to press flowers as well as the best flowers for pressing. Participants will make three simple cards, bookmarks or table lanterns using pressed flowers.

Where: OSU Extension Office, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield.

Cost: $20 per person
