Youngstown Marathon will have new course
The Youngstown Marathon Foundation will have a new course that travels further into the city.
The June 3 race will feature Federal Street downtown and Youngstown State University.
“Our runners desired more Youngstown in their course, and thanks to our team and the support of the City, we made that happen for 2018,” said Courtney Poullas, Chief Executive Officer and Race Director.
The Foundation plans to certify the new marathon course as a Boston Marathon qualifying race for 2019.
All distances for the Youngstown Marathon races share a common start and finish line. The full marathon provides views of scenic Mill Creek Park along with the city’s downtown. The half marathon and 5k courses remain the same as they were in 2017.
According to Mark Lipinsky, Youngstown Marathon Chief Operating Officer and Course Logistics Director, “The new course is much more runner friendly. The 2018 marathon course is the way that Youngstown was meant to be run.”
The additional mileage through the city eliminates some of the tougher hills in Mill Creek Park. Runners will loop Lake Newport twice and have just one hill to trek after crossing the half marathon point.
