Former Ohio State QB Savic dies at age 92

COLUMBUS

Former Ohio State quarterback Pandel Savic, who grew up in Girard, died Tuesday at the age of 92.

Savic was the quarterback for the Buckeyes when they won their first Rose Bowl in 1950. Ohio State beat USC in that game, 17-14.

He came to the United States from Macedonia when he was nine years old. His family settled in Girard, where he became one of the city’s greatest athletes. Savic eventually served with the Marines in the South Pacific during World War II.

After his college football career ended, Savic helped found Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin and was the tournament chairman of The Memorial for 30 years.

“Pandel Savic was as good a friend as I have ever had,” Jack Nicklaus said in a statement. “I have known Pandel since I was 6 years old, and until his passing this week, he had been a great friend, great supporter, and great family man. He helped to found Muirfield Village Golf Club and the Memorial Tournament. We partnered in a number of golf tournaments, and spent a lot of quality time together and shared countless laughs through the years.“

Savic, a member of the Girard Hall of Fame, was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Stevens shoots 72 in Junior Championship

Brookfield’s Conner Stevens shot a 72 in the first round of the 2018 Ohio Junior Championship at York Golf Club. Stevens is tied for eighth in the 16-18 division.

Campbell’s Dean Austalosh is two strokes behind with a 74, tied for 19th. Boardman’s Brian Terlesky shot a 75 and is tied for 26th.

YSU has three named HERO all-americans

Youngstown State tailback Tevin McCaster, linebacker Armand Dellovade and center Vitas Hrynkiewicz earned mention on the HERO Sports Preseason All-America Football team which was announced on Tuesday.

McCaster earned first-team accolades while Dellovade and Hrynkiewicz were second-team honorees.

Last year, McCaster was a first-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference selection while Dellovade and Hrykiewicz were second-team honorees.

McCaster rushed for 1,066 yards on 221 carries and scored 13 touchdowns in 2017.

Dellovade, a three-year starter, finished second on the team with 76 total tackles, including 40 solo stops in 2017, He had 5.5 TFLs and three sacks. Hrynkiewicz, a two-year starter, has started the last 27 games.

Senators player’s wife alleges online bullying

OTTAWA, Ontario

The wife of Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson has filed an order of protection against the girlfriend of one of Karlsson’s teammates, alleging harassment and cyberbullying.

In an application for a peace bond filed May 4 in an Ottawa court, Melinda Karlsson said Monika Caryk posted hundreds of derogatory online messages aimed at her and her husband, a star player for the Senators. Caryk is the longtime partner of Senators forward Mike Hoffman.

Nick Nurse promoted to Raptors head coach

TORONTO

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that Nick Nurse has agreed to become the next coach of the Toronto Raptors.

Nurse is replacing Dwane Casey, who was fired after Toronto was swept from the second round of the playoffs by Cleveland. Nurse worked under Casey the past five seasons as an assistant.

According to the person who spoke to the AP, Nurse was in the process of completing contract terms and reaching out to staff Tuesday.

The Raptors went 59-23 this season, the top record in the Eastern Conference.
