Cianciola named first team All-Ohio


Canfield boys tennis standout Tim Cianciola received first team All-Ohio singles honors by the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association on Thurdsay.

Cianciola took third place in the Division I state singles tournament, beating Lewis Center Olentangy’s Stu Brdicka 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.

East Liverpool doubles partners Chris Montgomery and Alex Tambolini were named second team All-Ohio.

Montgomery and Tambolini advanced to the second round of the Division II doubles state tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Bryan’s Isaac Bowers and Logan King.

Lay, Mihalick to play in Mizuno All-Star Series


Jackson-Milton’s Sebastian Lay and Western Reserve’s Garrett Mihalick played in the Mizuno Senior All Star Series in Columbus. The two-day tournament for Ohio high school seniors began on Thursday.

The two locals are playing for the Navy Blue team, featuring players from Northeast Ohio.

On Thursday, Lay had a hit in Navy Blue’s 12-5 win over Green, featuring players from the Northwest district. Mihalick got a hit in the Navy Blue team’s 5-4 loss to the Red team in extra innings, Navy Blue’s second game of the day.

The Navy Blue team will Royal Blue in the final game of the series on Friday at 1:20 p.m.

Springfield seniors sign letters of intent

New Middletown

Springfield’s Haley LaMorticella will play soccer at Geneva College and Shantel Springer will compete in track and field at California University of Pennsylvania.

YSU to host Brad Smith football camp

Registration is now open for the Brad Smith True Foundation Football Camp and Chalk Talk. The events will take place at Youngstown State’s Stambaugh Stadium and on June 23. Events are free for young men and women ages 7-18.

Athletes ages 7-12 will train from 10am to noon. Campers who choose to attend the Chalk Talk will receive valuable life skills training and a special studio training session from 10am-1pm.

Older athletes will train from 1-3pm. Campers will receive instruction from current and former professional athletes and top area high school and performance coaches. Lunch, t-shirts and swag bags will be provided.

Penguin Club Golf Outing sets record


A record-setting 180 golfers participated in the 2018 West Coast Chill Penguin Club Scholarship Golf Outing on June 6 at the Youngstown Country Club.

Due to the volume of foursomes, 45 in all, the day was split into two flights, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Ten groups played in the morning flight while 35 participated in the afternoon shotgun start.

The team of Tom Hutch, Bryan Horne, Zack Mansky and Gregg Strollo won the event by carding a 58 (-13 under par). The group of Ray Briya, Randy Barker, Pat Ginnetti and Mickey Marozzi shot a 60 (-11) while the team of Caroline Collins, Eric Doan, Vince Slomsky and Derek Steyer finished third after a scorecard playoff with a score of 62 (-9).
