Poland-Canfield remains unbeaten at World Series


KIRKLAND, WASH.

Poland-Canfield improved to 2-0 at the Junior League World Series (ages 13-14) with Monday’s 11-1 win over Southeast’s team from Tampa, Fla.

Mia Opalick hit a three-run homer while Bridgett Kelly and Layni Bednar each drove in two runs for Poland-Canfield.

Bednar and Alaina Francis each had three hits and Paige Ogden had two.

Ogden tripled while Francis, Kelly and Emily Denney doubled.

Opalick was the winning pitcher. In four-and-two-thirds innings, she allowed one run on three hits. She struck out two. Alaina Scavina finished the game on the mound.

Tatiana Roman, Saylor Clark and Avery Deangelo had Southeast hits.

Today at 5 p.m., Poland-Canfield, the Central Regional champion, will play the host team, Redmond (2-0).

Boardman 8, New albany 4

Vincent Butto and Ryan Smith combined to pitch Boardman’s win in the Little League Baseball 9-10 state tournament.

Gabe Hammerton and Cameron Ganser had two hits apiece to pace Boardman, which rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the third inning.

Today at 5:30 p.m., Boardman plays New Philadelphia in an elimination game.
