The Canfield speech and debate team attended the 2018 National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA) national tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., from June 16-23.

Ultimately, Canfield registered its best ever performance at the NSDA national tournament.

Taryn Rothbauer and Michael Factor finished eighth in the nation in Public Forum Debate out of 287 entries. Based on their performances, Rothbauer and Factor both earned $1,500 college scholarships from the Arthur N. Rupe Foundation. Additionally, they tied the best placing for Canfield students at the NSDA national tournament.

Eva Lamberson finished 11th in the nation in Lincoln-Douglas Debate out of 257 entries.

Dominic DeRamo advanced to the round of the top 60 in United States Extemp, finishing 31st in the nation, out of 243 entries.

Jennifer Smith and Dominic DuPonty finished in the top 32 teams in the nation in Public Forum Debate out of 287 entries.

Gregory Halley advanced to the round of the top 60 in Informative Speaking, finishing 48th in the nation, out of 239 entries.

Additionally, based on the performance of the attending debaters, Canfield earned a Debate School of Excellence Award, placing Canfield in the top 20 debate programs at the NSDA national tournament who did not receive a combined speech, debate and congress top 10 overall award. Canfield was one of two teams from Ohio to earn a Debate School of Excellence Award at the 2018 NSDA national tournament, along with Hawken School from the greater Cleveland area. This is the second consecutive year that Canfield has earned the NSDA’s Debate School of Excellence Award.

Canfield’s speech and debate team has been recognized by the NSDA as being among the Top 100 strongest programs in the United States since the 2010-2011 season.
