Autism Society receives donation to host camp

Staff report

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley recently received a $10,000 grant from the Hine Memorial Fund of The Youngstown Foundation to support its fourth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards in Every New Day. Camp F.R.I.E.N.D., an all-inclusive day-camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends, is hosted by the Youngstown Central YMCA and facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions for one week each month this summer.

The remaining camp weeks are Monday to Aug. 3 for a special-needs day camp with neurotypical peers for age 3 to 22, and Aug. 13 to 17 for an integrated camp with the Youngstown YMCA day camp for children 6 to 13.

Thanks to supplements and sponsorships, the reduced fee is $150 per student per week. Financial scholarships are available. Registration forms may be downloaded at and can be mailed by request by email at

Each age-based grouping will be led by one certified teacher or BCBA, assisted by an experienced, registered behavioral therapy aide and supported by additional volunteers and neurotypical peers. Staff members will be trained and dedicate time to prepare camp activities, set up positive behavior support systems, social stories for activities, visual schedules and social skills activities.
