Scherr qualifies for 2018 Amateur

Youngstown State golfer Kevin Scherr posted rounds of 71 and 73 at the Country Club at Woodmore on Tuesday to qualify for the 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California August 13-19.

Pebble Beach will be hosting the U.S. Amateur for the first time since 1999 and the fifth time overall. The tournament, which is organized by the United States Golf Association (USGA), has served as a proving ground for some of the best golfers in PGA Tour history. Past winners of the event include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Spyglass Hill Golf Course will co-host the tournament during medal play for the second time.

Scherr is coming off an impressive freshman campaign in which he earned two top-10 finishes and was YSU's top finisher on two occasions. He participated in all 11 tournaments and 30 rounds while averaging a team-best 76.7 strokes per round. Scherr also led the Penguins at the Horizon League Championships with a three round 224 (73-75-76) to notch a career-best, sixth-place finish.

OSU assistant coach charged in dispute

An Ohio State assistant coach has been charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass stemming from a dispute with his ex-wife.

According to court records, wide receivers coach Zach Smith was served with the misdemeanor complaint May 12 in the north Columbus suburb of Powell.

The 34-year-old Smith was never arrested and pleaded not guilty to the charge last month.

His attorney, Bradley Koffel, said Smith is accused by his ex-wife of driving to her apartment after she told him they would meet elsewhere so he could drop off their son.

An Ohio State spokesman said the program is aware of the incident but declined to comment.

Smith, the grandson of former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, has been on the staff since coach Urban Meyer arrived in 2012.

Wolverines' Beilein agrees to extension

Michigan coach John Beilein has agreed to a contract extension through the 2022-23 season.

The school said Wednesday the five-year deal automatically extends an additional year and repeats each year until either Beilein or the school decides not to renew. The 65-year-old Beilein has been at Michigan for 11 seasons and took the Wolverines to the national championship game in 2013 and 2018. Michigan lost to Louisville the first time and lost to Villanova earlier this year.

Beilein was briefly in the mix for the Detroit Pistons' coaching job after this past season, but they hired Dwane Casey.

Real Salt Lake coach suspended by MLS

Real Salt Lake coach Mike Petke has been suspended an additional game and fined $10,000 by Major League Soccer for on-field misconduct during a game against Minnesota United.

The suspension announced Wednesday follows an automatic one-game game ban for being ejected from the Utah club's 3-1 road loss Saturday night.

Petke was fined for abusive and profane language directed at officials, uncontrollable behavior when he was ejected and public criticism of officials during a postgame press conference. Real Salt Lake also was fined $10,000 fine for social media posts.

Petke will miss games Saturday night against Colorado and July 28 against San Jose.
