Monday Night Writers will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Small Meeting Room at the Canfield Public Library, 43 W. Main St, Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of "Traveling Left Of Center And Other Stories."

Stitches in Time, a get-together for people who enjoy such crafting as needlepoint, crochet, cross stitch, etc., will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in the Quaker Room of Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St. Participants should take a project to work on and relax in the air-conditioned Quaker Room. The evening is open to the public and free to attend. No registration is required. DANCES

Friendly Squares will host a "Hot Dog" square dance from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday at the Niles Scope Center, 14 E. State St., Niles. Gene Hammond and Neil Harner will be the callers, and Frankie Hammond will be calling line dances between the tips. This will be a high/low dance with tips for new and experienced dancers. D.A.R.E. Singles Group meets at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at Disciples Christian Church, 565 Boardman-Canfield Road. The group has scheduled the following activities: Saturday, Mastropietro Winery for the Rib Festival at noon; Monday, meet at Dairy Queen in Cornersburg for dessert at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, bocce at Boardman Park at 6 p.m.; Thursday, Music in Boardman Park to hear the "Wrangler Band" at 6:30 p.m.; and July 20, card night at Denny's on Mahoning Avenue, from 6 to 10 p.m.

SOCIETIES

Boardman William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society will meet at 10 a.m. July 21 at Kravitz's Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave, Liberty. Cost is $5 for members and $6 for nonmembers. Reservations are suggested, and walk-ins are admitted based upon seating availability. Complimentary refreshments are provided and entertainment is by Dolores DePietro. Allan May, author of "Crimetown U.S.A.: History of Mahoning Mafia" and "Welcome to the Jungle Inn: The Story of the Mafia's Most Infamous Den," will speak on local organized crime. Salem Historical Society Museum will be open Saturday for Salem Second Saturday involvement. The theme for this event is "Salem Sidewalk Sale." General Store and Romanian exhibits open. Enter through the Heritage Garden gate along East Pershing Avenue between 1 and 4 p.m.

Salem Historical Society will host a reception in memory of Rosemarie Sulea Cardoso Saturday in Dale Shaffer Library meeting room, 239 South Lundy Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m.

SUPPORT GROUPS

Grief Share Support Group, hosted by Churchill United Methodist Church, 189 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, Liberty, is meeting at 6 p.m. every Thursday through Aug. 14. NAMI Mahoning Valley offers support and education to people and families dealing with serious mental illness. Support groups are as follows: Connection, a group for individuals with a mental health diagnosis, meets the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6 p.m. at Alta Care Building, 142 Javit Court, Austintown; every Thursday at 1:30 p.m. at Community Center, 1344 Fifth Ave, Youngstown; every third Thursday at 1 p.m. at Madison Commons, 741 Madison, Youngstown; and the first and third Mondays at 6 p.m. at Madison Commons, 741 Madison, Youngstown. This group is specifically for individuals dealing with substance abuse and mental illness. Family Support, a group for family members of a person with mental illness meets every first Thursday at 11 a.m. at Girard Library, 105 E.
