The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters hosted its 10th annual Cardinal Classic Soccer Tournament July 7-8 with 43 schools participating in the two-day event. Five fields were in use, all located on the high school grounds and including the stadium, with several schools bringing two or more teams to play 40-minute games.
The tournament took place throughout two days, with the boys teams playing Saturday and the girls teams playing Sunday.
Teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania participated in the boys’ and girls’ divisions and included Poland, Berlin Hiland, Field, Niles McKinley, Champion, East Liverpool, Harvey, Cuyahoga Falls, Austintown Fitch, West Branch, Hathaway Brown, Champion, Kirtland, Boardman and Girard, along with numerous teams from the Akron, Cleveland and Columbus areas.
The Cardinal Classic is a key fundraiser for the Canfield High School boys and girls soccer program, and was organized by the parent members of the Canfield Soccer Boosters, with Tracy Stein serving as president.
According to Stein, proceeds from the annual tournament are used to buy new uniforms, team camp and tournament fees for both the boys and girls teams.
The goal of the tournament was to give the coaches a chance to view the players pre-season and to prepare for the fall season. Coaches used this opportunity to see the players with the ball and to learn what the team needs to work on for the upcoming fall season. It also gave the coaches a chance to watch the players and get a sense of which players to select for the junior varsity and varsity teams.
The tournament also had community support and corporate sponsors, which included Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, DiRusso’s Sausage, Belleria Pizza, Fairway Ford, Great Clips, Michelle Duke, Iron Sights Armory, Dr. and Mrs. Raymond Bernat, Rogue Wave Car Wash, Simon Roofing, Fishbone Offraod, Sweeney Chevrolet, Titan LED, Ambrose Family Eye Center, Tudor Physical Therapy, Coventry Lighting, Tommasina’s Window Treatments and Interior Design, Fusillo Flooring, Prout Boiler, Heating and Welding, Windsor House at Canfield, Trumbull Metal Specialties, Dr. Jennifer Manning, DPH Architecture, the Palma Family, PNC Bank - Ted and Lisa Schmidt, the Francis Family, Fitness Together, the Ieraci Family, Peaberry’s, Parisi Excavating, Rise Pies/Muransky Corporation, Schroedel, Scullin & Bestic, Chemical Bank, Levi’s Landscaping and Design, Kambrook Seal Coat, Rubosky Chiropractic, Pro Adjuster, MS Consultants, the Judallah Family, the Colonna Family, the Puskar Family, American Portfolios, the Carey Family, Midwest Apparel, Olfield Graphics and Mill Creek Oral/Maxillofacial Surgery Associates.

Members of the Canfield High School National Honor Society were also able to earn service hours by volunteering at the tournament.
