Staff report

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.

Former Cleveland Indians minor leaguer Junior Soto homered twice and drove in four runs late in the game as the Staten Island Yankees beat the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 5-1 Wednesday night.

Soto’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning snapped a 1-1 tie. He added a three-run shot in the eighth to provide insurance runs for Staten Island (12-13).

Josh Breaux’s RBI double gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the third. The Scrappers’ Richie Palacios — a native of New York City — tied the game with a solo home run in the sixth.

Mahoning Valley (16-8) entered the night with the top offense in the New York-Penn League but were held in check by Staten Island pitchers Juan De Paula, Drew Finley and Daniel Alvarez combined for 15 strikeouts in a four-hitter.

The Scrappers’ Alex Royalty started and scattered five hits in three innings. Adam Scott pitched three scoreless innings and fanned five. Luis Santos and Luis Araujo also pitched in relief.

The teams will meet again tonight at 7 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark.
