Poland/Canfield wins Junior League crown

CANFIELD

The Poland/Canfield 13-14 Junior League softball team defeated West Portsmouth twice on Monday to win the state title at McCune Park.

Poland/Canfield won the five-inning games by scores of 13-0 and 16-0.

Poland/Canfield advances to the Central Regional tournament in South Holland, Ill., that begins July 20.

Canfield softball team is LL state runner-up

WEST PORTSMOUTH

The Wheelersburg 11-12 Little League softball team defeated Canfield, 3-0, on Monday to win the state championship.

Malena Toth and Haydyn Merrit had hits for Canfield. Toth tossed a five-hitter, striking out six and walking one.

Dave Blaney wins Memorial at Speedway

Hartford

Former NASCAR driver Dave Blaney won Saturday’s Lou Blaney Memorial race at Sharon Speedway.

His 30-lap victory was worth $5,000 as Blaney became the fifth different Sprint Car winner in as many events in 2018 at Sharon.

George Hobaugh was second and Spencer Bayston third.

In the modified race, Mike Maresca finished ahead of Kevin Hoffman.

The next races at Sharon Speedway will be on July 21.

Players, refs trade punches in AAU game

EMERSON, Ga.

A video shows players and referees trading punches at an Amateur Athletic Union basketball game in an Atlanta suburb.

News outlets report the video has been shared on social media thousands of times. It shows the Sunday morning brawl in the AAU game between Chicago-based R.A.W. Athletics and the Houston Raptors at the LakePoint sports facility in Emerson.

R.A.W. Athletics coach Howard Martin tells WSB-TV he thinks one of his players had complained to a referee about a call before he was ejected from the game. Martin says the player was walking toward the bench when the referee pushed him.

Raptors coach Bobby Benjamin says he saw a player bump into the referee, but he’s not exactly sure what started the fight.

Ex-Lions TE Pettigrew arrested in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH

Police say a former Detroit Lions player has been arrested in Pittsburgh for punching an officer after refusing to pay a limo driver.

NFL free agent Brandon Pettigrew is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, theft of services and public drunkenness.

Police say the 33-year-old tight end refused to pay $97 for a limo ride to a downtown hotel early Monday.

According to a complaint, when officers arrived Pettigrew became aggressive and punched one officer in the chest three times. Police allege he was visibly intoxicated.

The complaint says officers drew their stun guns but Pettigrew, who lives in Flint, Texas, complied and was handcuffed.

Former Seahawk CB threatens woman

LOS ANGELES

A former NFL cornerback has been arrested after police say he broke into the Southern California house of an ex-girlfriend who has a restraining order against him.

Police say Brandon Browner broke into the house, threatened to kill the woman and stole a Rolex watch valued at about $20,000.

The 33-year-old was arrested Sunday in La Verne, which is about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.

Browner is from nearby Pomona and played football for Oregon State before signing with the Seattle Seahawks in 2011. He later played for the New England Patriots when they won the Super Bowl.

Browner was previously arrested for domestic violence.
