Children’s Services forms new support group

Staff report

A new support group, SUCCEED, has formed in the Mahoning County for parents who have a current or past involvement with Mahoning County Children Services.

This is a group made up of primary parents supporting each other and providing hope and empowerment.

The SUCCEED philosophy believes that primary parents can receive the best support from other parents who have gone through similar experiences. They can provide understanding and support, and those who successfully work through the child welfare system can serve as role models.

Discussion of important topics include but are not limited to: visitation; working with foster parents and caseworkers; finding community resources; dealing with personal emotional issues along with those of their children; supporting parents who are working to have their children returned or who feel they can provide best for their children by letting others care for them; and socializing with other parents.

The support group is a pilot project funded by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, from a desire to support the previously established Helping Ohio Parents Effectively program.

The mission of SUCCEED support groups is to provide hope, support and empowerment to primary parents, and to strengthen them to become effective, caring parents for their children.

The program believes in mutual respect, self-healing, compassion, sharing, remorse and acceptance of mistakes, parental leadership of families and confidentiality.
