Man facing charges after police chase, gunfire

Staff report

William O. Campbell Jr., 22, of Saratoga Avenue Northwest, was arraigned Monday in Warren Municipal Court on two weapons charges related to gunfire early Sunday on Lodwick Avenue Northwest in the River Run Apartments.

No injuries were reported from the 3:25 a.m. gunfire.

Not-guilty pleas were entered for Campbell on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm and improper handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, and he is being held in the county jail without eligibility to make bond.

Campbell pleaded not guilty to two traffic charges – driving under suspension and a stop-sign violation.

A police officer was working off-duty security in the complex when he heard gunfire and headed in that direction. Another officer advised he was chasing a vehicle on Tod Avenue Northwest, but the man bailed out of the car on Dunstan Drive and fled on foot.

Another officer spotted Campbell on foot near the old St. Joseph’s Riverside Hospital on Tod Avenue wearing only a T-shirt and jeans. It was Campbell, and he was sweating, police said.

The officer chasing the car said it was Campbell.

Police recovered a semi- automatic rifle, several spent shell casings and two ammunition magazines from inside the vehicle. A pair of black gloves was found nearby.

The shell casings were the same as the ones recovered from the parking lot where the gunshots had occurred, police said.
