The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation will host Chloe Valdary, an African-American Israel advocate, for a dinner and lecture today at 6:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 505 Gypsy Lane.
Valdary is the director of partnerships and outreach at Jerusalem U, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to film-based Israel and Jewish education. She was named one of the top 100 people positively affecting Jewish life by Algemeiner, and was a Tikvah fellow under Pulitzer Prize-winner Bret Stephens at The Wall Street Journal. Her defense of Israel can be seen in Jerusalem U videos, and also in The Wall Street Journal, The Jerusalem Post, The Times of Israel, Tablet Magazine, Huffington Post, Israel Hayom, The Daily Beast, Al Jazeera and others.
Valdary, 25, a Christian, grew up in New Orleans. She became interested in Israel in high school after viewing “Freedom Writers,” a 2007 film about a teacher that uses material about the Holocaust to help inner-city students understand the racism they face in their own lives, and has become a commentator on issues relating to race.
After dinner will be a presentation by Federation Israeli Emissary Gon Erez on the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and is free. For information, contact Bonnie Deutsch Burdman at 330-746-3251 or email@example.com.
