Kuzman’s Polka Pals to play at reunion party

Staff report

A polka party reunion, with music by the former Kuzman’s Polka Pals, will be held at Kravitz’s Deli meeting room, 3135 Belmont Ave., on Jan. 20 at 10 a.m., sponsored by the William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society.

Admission is $6 ($5 for society members). Reservations are suggested; call Richard S. Scarsella at 330-726-8277.

Featured polka musicians on the button box will include Dolores DePietro, who performs monthly for the WHMHS; Joe Godina, and Pete November. Accordion players will include Laurie James and Stan O’Day.

The musicians will perform polka tunes that were once played weekly at Kuzman’s Ballroom in Girard, which closed in 2017.

The performers will also share memories of the heyday of polka music in the Mahoning Valley. A brief history of polka music, which has roots in Slavic countries, and the art of playing the button box and accordion will be provided, and a question and answer period will follow. Attendees are encouraged to bring photos and memorabilia of Kuzman’s polka nights.

The McGuffey society conducts cultural and educational programs in an effort to keep alive the legacy of nationally known educator William Holmes McGuffey, who was educated in Youngstown in the 1800s.

The society is also currently conducting a membership drive. Membership comes in several levels – individual, family, organization, business, patron and lifetime – and provides opportunities to participate in a school-based literacy program, the annual McGuffey Founder’s Day/Pioneer Award program and the monthly public programs’ committees.
