Holly Marshall - Just my luck

Holly Marshall - Just my luck

By Holly Marshall

“Hi, I’m Jason”, Jason said.

“My name’s Chloe”, Chloe responded.

“Donating blood always makes me feel good, no matter how rotten my day”, Jason added.

Chloe replied, “ I know what you mean, I feel the same way”.

Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I have to take this call”, Chloe stated.

“It was nice meeting you, but I have to go”, Chloe rushed out as the center nurse bandaged Chloe’s arm and wrapped up the liter of blood.

“Just my luck”, Jason thought. “I finally meet someone and she has to leave”, Jason muttered as he watched Chloe quickly exit the center.

Later, as Jason pulled into his parents drive, he noticed an unfamiliar car.

“Maybe the nurse got a new car”, he thought. His dad’s cancer was advancing quickly and the home care nurse was now coming daily to give medical treatments. Jason had moved back home to help his parents and run the family’s business. It wasn’t the life he’d planned, but plans change. As far as he was concerned, family always came first.

As Jason walked in the front door, the nurse was setting up the I.V.

Drip.

Jason was momentarily stunned – he recognized her: the blue pants, the wavy hair, the glasses.

Chloe was also surprised. “I guess your dad was my call. Your regular nurse has a family emergency, so I’m taking over this case”, she replied. “My last case ended unexpectedly this morning”, she said sadly, “so I was available for this one”.

Drip. Drip.

“Family is important”, commented Jason softly as he sat down next to her and smiled.

“It’s the most important thing in the world”, Chloe answered as she smiled back at him and adjusted the I.V.

Drip. Drip. Drip.
