Boardman cross country takes first

Boardman’s Mitchel Dunham raced to a first place finish, outpacing 225 competitors, to lead Boardman High School to a second place finish at the Keystone Icebreaker Invitational this on Aug. 20 at The Lorain Parks Equestrian Complex in LaGrange.

The Spartans placed eight runners in the top 50, with Dunham’s time of 16:40, sophomore Frank Bero placing sixth in 17:27, sophomore Justin Maloney in 27th with 18:55, junior River Flatley in 32nd at 19:04, sophomore Anthony Marshall in 41st at 19:19, sophomore Caydin Newberry in 45th at 19:30, sophomore Beau Gorby in 47th at 19:40 and senior Payton Torres capturing 49th in 19:41.

“It was a very nice way to start our season,” said Spartan coach John Phillips. “You never know what to expect on opening day, but we have a good foundation to build on and have a successful season.”

Setting new personal bests at the event were senior Cameron Maloney at 20:54, Flatley, Bero, Gorby and freshmen Jake Blazina at 27:45, Josh Cubarrubia at 27:57, Trey DePietro at 23:33 and Noah Shurrel at 30:47.
