Valley-based artist creates painting of Washington

A large-scale painting of George Washington, created by Youngstown artist Ray Simon, will be unveiled Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Mahoning County Courthouse.

The 7- by 5-foot painting shows Washington on horseback, amidst symbolism about his life and accomplishments.

U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson will discuss the piece and its educational content at the unveiling of the painting, which is titled “Divine Providence.” The public is invited to attend.

The piece was underwritten by Karen Buchwald Wright, CEO of Ariel Corp., and a major contributor to the George Washington Presidential Library and Museum in Mount Vernon, Va. The painting will become part of the collection at the museum.

Accompanying the painting will be a platform equipped with audio files, tutorials, lesson planners and assessments.
