Salem Historical society offers trolley tours

Staff report

The Salem Historical Society will offer its Underground Railroad and Ghost Tours on the Quakertown Trolley. The Underground Railroad tours will be at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 26, noon Sept. 8, 1:30 p.m. Sept. 16, noon Oct. 6, 1:30 p.m. Oct. 14 and noon Oct. 28.

A guide in Quaker attire will take passengers back in time to the year 1856. After hearing the stories and seeing the sites, travelers return to the 21st century with a better understanding of the plight of slaves, the working of the Underground Railroad and the abolitionist movement that flourished in Salem before the Civil War. More than 100 images that show interiors, Underground Railroad hiding places and several abolitionists who lived in or visited them will be shown on screen. Tours last about 75 minutes. Cost is $15 per person, and a minimum of 15 participants are required.

The Ghost Tours are scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 6, and at 6, 8 and 10 Oct. 13 and 20 and 27. The Ghost Trolley Tour takes people out of the downtown to famous graves and other “haunted” areas around Salem. Cost is $15. Advance reservations required. Walk-ups accepted if there are openings. Tours may be cancelled if minimum isn’t met. Call the reservation line and leave a message. Calls will be returned.
