Scrappers drop doubleheader versus Auburn
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers’ lead in the Pinckney Division is gone.
Wednesday at Eastwood Field, the Scrappers dropped a doubleheader to the Auburn Doubledays. Auburn won Game 1, 7-6, and Game 2, 6-3.
Nic Perkins led the way for Auburn in Game 1. With the game tied at 2 in the top of the third, the Perkins hit a grand slam to give the Doubledays (32-24) the lead for good.
The Scrappers (32-24) attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh with a run-scoring double by Connor Smith and a two-run single by Mitch Reeves, but Henry Pujols grounded out with the tying run at first.
Smith hit a solo home run in the third, his second of the season. Smith finished with two RBIs and Reeves drove in three.
Scrappers starter Zach Draper allowed five runs on six hits and two walks in 21/3 innings.
Mahoning Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of Game 2, but Auburn scored four in the third to take the lead. The Doubledays added an insurance runs in the fourth and seventh to push the game out of reach.
Tre Gantt, Jose Fermin and Jason Rodriguez each drove in a run for the Scrappers.
Reliever Luis Araujo started his first game since 2016. The Scrappers pitcher allowed three runs on five hits in 22/3 innings.
