Baird Brothers wins tournament opener

LAREDO, TEXAS

Baird Brothers defeats Puerto Rico 4-1 in first-round game in the PONY Palomino World Series.

Baird Brothers will play Chinese Taipei at 5 p.m. today.

Marshall McGraw tossed a three-hitter and stuck out 11. Andrew Russell picked up a one-out save. Dayln Brickner had a triple and single. Connor Rakow added a two-run double and sacrifice fly.

Canfield 11-U falls to Galion in Ironton

Ironton

The Canfield 11-U baseball team fell to Galion 8-0 in a state tournament losers bracket game Friday at Ironton National Little League, eliminating the locals from the tournament.

Canfield came up one game short of the championship game.

Canfield was in a tight game until starting pitcher Noah Anzevino injured his wrist in the second inning. He pitched the third but was pulled after the inning.

Trey McNutt had a double and stole a base for Canfield while Zain Jadallah had a single.

Boardman 8-10 team loses to Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE

Boardman’s 10-U Little League team fell to Cambridge 4-2 on Friday to end its state tournament run. No other details were reported.

JUNIOR LEAGUE SOFTBALL

Poland/Canfield eliminated out west

KIRKLAND, WASH.

Poland/Canfield lost fell to Washington District 9 3-2 in eight innings on Friday and was eliminated from the Junior League Softball World Series on Friday.

The locals had rallied to tie the game at 2 in the seventh inning, but the trailing runner, and potential winning run, was thrown out at the plate.

Grace Haegele’s RBI double drove in the game-winner for Washington.

Poland/Canfield had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by Paige Ogden.

Haegele went the distance on a five-hitter and struck out five.

Ogden took the loss for Poland/Canfield. She allowed two runs on six hits over four innings, striking out three and walking one.

Ogden went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Poland/Canfield. Alaina Francis handled nine chances in the field flawlessly as the locals played errorless ball.
