Poland/Canfield team out of contention
Poland/Canfield watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a 9-4 loss to Southwest on Thursday in the 14-U World Series.
Southwest scored on a double by Marlee DeLeon in the first inning, a double by Nikolette Schmidt in the second, and a double by Gabriela Leal in the second.
The locals lost despite out-hitting Southwest 13 to 11.
Southwest fired up the offense in the first inning. Southwest scored one run on a stolen base.
Southwest scored four runs in the second inning. Southwest offense in the inning was led by Schmidt and Leal, who each had RBIs in the inning.
Brooke Otto was the winning pitcher for Southwest. She went seven innings, allowing four runs on 13 hits, striking out four and walking zero.
Alaina Francis took the loss for Poland/Canfield. She surrendered two runs on four hits over three and a third innings, striking out two.
Mia Opalick started the game for Poland/Canfield. She went one and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on three hits and striking out one.
Poland/Canfield hit one home run on the day. Alaina Scavina went yard in the seventh inning.
Poland/Canfield tallied 13 hits in the game. Bridgett Kelly, Paige Ogden, Layni Bednar, Meredith Trevis and Scavina each collected multiple hits for Poland/Canfield.
Poland/Canfield didn’t commit a single error in the field. Kelly had the most chances in the field with nine.
Otto, DeLeon, Abigail Kennon, and Leal each managed multiple hits for Southwest. Otto led Southwest with three hits in three at bats. Southwest stole eight bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Mihyia Davis led the way with three.
Poland/Canfield’s quest for a second title is over. The team plays a consolation game today at 7:30 p.m., against an opponent to be named.
Boardman tops Shelby in state tournament
Anthony Groner went 52⁄3 innings, struck out 10 and allowed three runs on three hits as Boardman beat Shelby 7-4 on Thursday.
Gabe Hammerton finished the game by getting a pop-out after Shelby scored another run. Groner, Hammerton, Ryan Smith and Collin Resetar paced the offense by getting two hits apiece.
Boardman returns to action tonight at 8 against the Washington Courthouse-Cambridge winner
Canfield loses big against New Albany
New Albany beat Canfield 12-0 on Thursday in a winners bracket game.
No other details were reported.
Canfield will meet Galion today at 4 p.m. The winner will meet New Albany at 7 p.m. in the state championship.
An “if necessary” game will follow on Saturday at 10 a.m.
