Gala to take place at OH WOW! Museum

Youngstown’s Advancing Education – Reducing Crime community coalition, in partnership with Youngstown State University’s Beeghly College of Education, will host the Mahoning Valley Teacher Appreciation Gala and Reunion from 3 to 6 p.m. April 14 at OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology, 11 W. Federal St. Admission is free to all kindergarten through 12th-grade Mahoning Valley teachers and a guest.

All public, private, parochial and charter school teachers are invited. There will be hors d’oeuvres, music, prizes, awards and presentations. Ticket information is available on Facebook at @weloveYoungstown or by calling 330-790-1521.

Chaplain Robert G. Danage, a 1977 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, will be the keynote speaker. Danage spent 28 years with the U.S. Department of Justice/Federal Bureau of Prisons and concurrently served 11 years in the U.S. Navy Chaplaincy Corps. Danage now works for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Methodist Health System in Dallas. He also is the founder, president and CEO of Faith Without Walls Prison Outreach, a nonprofit, faith-based Federal Offenders Re-entry Initiative organization.

The event also will feature Ohio Sen. Joe Schiavoni, D-Boardman, an advocate for public education who sits on the Senate Education Committee.

“We appreciate the significant investments teachers make in the lives of students,” Advancing Education – Reducing Crime founder Jon Howell said. Mahoning County Juvenile Court Judge Theresa Dellick said, “Teachers are called upon to do more than teach and often are the one person in a student’s life that makes a positive difference.”
