NAACP banquet set
The NAACP Youngstown Branch’s annual Freedom Fund Banquet will take place at 7 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Choffin Career & Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St.
The banquet’s focus is on equal-employment issues in the local community.
Cheryl Mabry, director of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s Cleveland Field Office since 2014, will be the guest speaker. The EEOC enforces federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination.
Mabry has investigated, supervised and negotiated multimillion-dollar cases against nationwide employers in the automotive manufacturing, construction and retail industries.

OCCHA, or Organizacion Civica y Cultural Hispana Americana Inc., invites community members to help plan a response to natural disasters in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
The organization will have a meeting at 6 tonight at the OCCHA social hall at 3660 Shirley Road.
“The people in Mexico and Puerto Rico have suffered catastrophic destruction and are in desperate need of our help,” the organization said in a news release.
Community members, organizations and businesses are invited to participate.
John Fritz, an Austintown Township firefighter who died last year, is one of four people who will be honored Oct. 8 at the 36th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Emmitsburg, Md. Fritz was found unresponsive at a township fire station on June 27, 2016. He was regarded by his coworkers and members of the community as a helpful, hardworking and oftentimes playful person.
Fritz’s name will be added to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial at the National Fire Academy.
A bunker restoration project at Mill Creek Golf Course is set to begin this week on the South course, Mill Creek MetroParks announced.
The project will include the restoration of 36 bunkers and additional drainage work. The South course will be open for play during the restoration process, but may be limited to nine-hole play for a few days of the project. The North course and practice facility will remain open for normal play and tee times.
The Campbell community is invited to attend the 75th annual Campbell Memorial High School Homecoming Parade at 6 p.m. today.
The parade will begin at St. Lucy Parish, 394 Tenney Ave., and end at the high school to kick off the homecoming football game. Refreshments will be served in the high school cafeteria following the parade.
Fall cleanup at the Girard City Cemetery has been scheduled through Oct. 9 for pulling flowers and cleaning graves. After Oct. 9, employees will be removing any plants on graves for fall cleanup in preparation for holiday wreaths.
