Children in the Mahoning Valley had the opportunity to enjoy a breakfast with author Rosemary Wells on July 28 at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Invitations were sent out to children who had participated and completed the Summer Discovery program with the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County.

The Summer Discovery program is hosted by PLYMC each summer to encourage children to read and participate in different events and programs the libraries host.

It serves as the trademark event to bring Summer Discovery to an end.

“I’m thrilled to be here, this is a beautiful city,” said Wells, author of the best-selling books, “Max and Ruby.”

The morning began with more than 500 people enjoying a breakfast and spending time with their friends and families. When everyone finished eating, Wells took the stage and spoke to the children about the importance of reading and libraries.

Wells has participated in various educational programs like this around the world. She enjoys traveling and sharing her love of reading with those who also love to read.

“We are celebrating these children who have done their summer reading. Children who are read to and who read books and are encouraged to read all the time, are our future readers,” said Wells.

Wells talked about how reading and being read to help shape the children into becoming successful and future leaders. She showed new research to the audience about how reading is beneficial to development.

There was an afternoon seminar with Wells for the children who participated in the Summer Discovery program, but didn’t quite complete it.

Along with the children, this breakfast with an author event is something the library faculty look forward to each year. Many of the children and families who attended the event are those families who frequent the libraries and utilize everything the libraries provide.
