Staff Report

COLUMBIANA

Parents, staff and 225 students at Heartland Christian School, 28 Pittsburgh St., Columbiana, will be experiencing a night of homelessness Friday.

The students have named the project “MISSION 125.” Participants were challenged last school year to raise at least $125 each to celebrate the 125 years of service from the Rescue Mission of the Mahoning Valley. Eighty-five families used many creative ways to raise funds all summer. Some hosted garage sales, others used special skills such as photography sessions to raise their gift for the mission.

Lynn Wyant, vice president of development for the mission said, “This is something so creative and fun. The memory of sleeping in a cardboard box with your family on the school playground to get a better understanding of the need for a new homeless shelter in Youngstown is one that I’m certain these students won’t soon forget. Every donation to the campaign to “Move Our Mission” means so much.”

A soup and bread dinner will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a service featuring current and former mission clients at 6:45 p.m.

Around 8 p.m., participants will begin to set up cardboard boxes, tents and cars to sleep on the school’s playground and parking lot.
