Local filmmakers compete for funding

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Mahoning Valley Film Initiative, a local organization of filmmakers, will compete against similar groups nationwide in the “Hometown Heroes” rally on seedandspark.com.

Each group participating in the crowdfunding event has a chance to fund their feature film, earn production discounts, secure distribution and even team up with Hollywood producers Mark and Jay Duplass, who are offering no-risk loans of up to $25,000 to a handful of winning projects.

The project the MFI has selected is a dark comedy called “Worst. Christmas. Ever.,” written and to be directed by Youngstown native John Chechitelli.

The story follows Sophia, a hapless teenager whose whole life snowballs out of control after discovering that she’s pregnant on Christmas Eve.

Youngstown’s Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, a former world boxing champ, is lending a hand. Not only will his son Leonardo Mancini have a prominent role in the movie, but Mancini is offering a spot in a boxing class he will lead in January for a contribution of $250 to the film. Thirty spots are available in the class.

To donate, go to seedandspark.com/fund/youngstown, beginning Tuesday.
