Hawaii was brought to Boardman Park on July 20 and 27 for senior citizens.

The Senior Fun Day Luau has been around for 14 years is part of the Senior Fun Day that is hosted the third and fourth Thursday of each month all year long. The luau normally attracts more than 100 people between the two days.

The sponsor of this luau was Woodlands Assisted Living and they provided different goodies for the guests to take home at the end of the luau. This is a partnership between Boardman Park and Ohio Living Senior Center. Seniors from the Blackburn Home, Easter Seals and many others came to celebrate.

“It’s a fun day and enjoyment for the seniors. It’s something a little different,” said recreation director Karen McCallum.

There was live entertainment from John Ruman, which got the seniors up and dancing along to the music. There was a costume contest for those who dressed in their best Hawaiian outfits. There was a lunch provided and Bingo to end the afternoon.

The luau is a tradition Boardman Park hosts for the seniors to enjoy something different from their daily routine. The luau incorporates the aspects of the normal Senior Fun Days, but in a different way that is related to the Hawaiian theme.

The next Senior Fun Day is Aug. 17 and information about registering can be found at boardmanpark.com.
