Two township trustees – one from Boardman and the other from Poland – say they will run next year for the 59th Ohio House District seat being vacated by state Rep. John Boccieri, a fellow Democrat.

Seeking the position are Boardman Trustee Larry Moliterno and Poland Trustee Eric Ungaro.

“Understanding the needs of the communities that make up the 59th district is critically important if you want to represent them well at the state level,” Moliterno said Thursday. “I work with many of the communities in the district on issues ranging from infrastructure to safety forces. These communities are the economic engines of our area – and their voice needs to be heard.”

Moliterno, president and chief executive officer for Meridian HealthCare since 2004, had considered running for the 33rd Ohio Senate District seat currently held by state Sen. Joe Schiavoni, a Boardman Democrat.

But with Boccieri of Poland announcing Monday that he will seek to replace Schiavoni, Moliterno said Thursday he would run for Boccieri’s soon-to-be-vacant seat.

Ungaro said he’s got nominating petitions for the Ohio House seat and plans to run for that seat next year.

“I have a big trustee’s race this fall, but yes, I plan to run” for the Ohio House, he said. “Competition will make the Democratic Party better. Let the people decide.”

Schiavoni cannot seek re-election to the state Senate next year because of the state’s term-limits law and is running for governor.

Michael Rulli, director of operations for Rulli Bros. and a Leetonia school board member, is running as a Republican for the 33rd District seat.
