Penguin Premiere set for Thursday

Mount Carmel to host

first Penguin Premiere

Youngstown State University men’s basketball fans can meet first-year head coach Jerrod Calhoun, his staff and players during the inaugural Penguin Premiere on Thursday night.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Youngstown.

The cost of a ticket is $30 for Penguin Club members and $35 for non-members.

“It’s a chance for fans to interact with the coaches,” Calhoun said. “It gets people to start thinking about the basketball season.”

The YSU men’s basketball program is hosting the event as a fundraiser for the team. All of the proceeds raised during the night will help the program pay for various expenses throughout the season.

Soft drinks, pizza, sliders, wings and other tailgate food will be included in the cost of the ticket. Beer and wine will be available for purchase.

“At the end of the night, we will introduce the basketball players and the fans will have a chance to meet them,” Calhoun said.

Part of the original plan was to show the New England Patriots host the Kansas City Chiefs and watch former Penguins All-American Derek Rivers in his NFL debut.

But Rivers is out for the season, so Penguin Premiere will now show other videos. These include basketball highlights, old basketball film, workout videos and videos that embrace the city of Youngstown.

Calhoun said he is looking forward to having the chance to meet the YSU basketball fans and talk to them about the upcoming season.

Tickets are still available for purchase by calling the men’s basketball office at 330-941-3004.
