Boardman sophomore Mitchel Dunham led the way for the Spartans to earn runner-up honors at the 2017 Salem Early Bird Invitational on Aug. 26.
Dunham was fourth overall out of 185 runners in a time of 17:19. Boardman improved to 19-4 on the season to finish the opening week of the 2017 campaign. Finishing behind Dunham was senior Mark Moradian in 18th place in a time of 18:40, senior Matt Moradian in 24th in a time of 19:01, senior Jimmy Lagese in 25th at 19:02 and senior Jason Fabian in 26th place with a time of 19:04.
Rounding out the top finishers for the Spartans was senior Nick Lascola in 27th place in a time of 19:05, junior Andy Beichner in 29th at 19:10 and senior Luke Hetzel in 30th in a time of 19:15. Freshman Caydin Newberry finished 38th in a time of 19:27, freshman Anthony Marshall was 44th overall in a time of 19:36 and freshman Frank Bero was 45th in a time of 19:41.
“We have a very young and inexperienced team this year,” said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. “However, the improvement that has been made in the month of August is very promising and points to a very successful season.”
Setting new personal bests at Salem were senior David Bader at 20:31, juniors Beichner and Payton Torres at 21:14, as well as sophomores Jackson Lipka at 20:32 and Zander Schobel at 22:43. Freshmen setting new career bests were Newberry, Marshall, Bero, Justin Maloney at 20:16, Cristian Ortiz at 20:26, Jason Lagese at 20:34, Brandon Noel at 22:20, Johnny Gabriele at 22:23, TaJuan Richards at 22:24, Michael Halchuck at 23:20, Beau Gorby at 23:56 and Sal Buonamici at 24:58.
