Northern Iowa 38, South Dakota State 18
Marcus Weymiller ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns on 42 carries and Northern Iowa jumped on top early, cruising to a win over South Dakota State. The Panthers (3-3, 2-1 Missouri Valley Conference) turned the tables on South Dakota State by scoring 17 first-quarter points. The Jackrabbits (4-2, 1-2) entered the game with a 56-7 advantage in opening quarters this season. South Dakota State also came in with the top third-down efficiency rating in the FCS at 62.1 percent, but the Panthers held them to 25 percent (3 of 12). Weymiller scored on runs of 11 and 15 yards in the first half. Eli Dunne threw for two TDs in the fourth and finished 13-of-22 passing for 169 yards.
Southern Illinois 42, Illinois State 7
Sam Straub threw for four touchdowns and Southern Illinois surprised FCS nationally-ranked Illinois State in the 80th meeting between the programs. The Salukis (3-3, 1-2 Missouri Valley) broke a three-game losing streak in the series to extend their winning streak over ranked opponents to 16 straight seasons. Straub went 22 of 34 for 368 yards and tied a career-high for touchdown passes in a game. On the third play of the second half, Straub evaded the rush and his long throw over the defense to Raphael Leonard ended in a 73-yard touchdown to make it 28-0.
South Dakota 56, Indiana State 6
Chris Streveler threw four touchdown passes and ran for 82 yards and a score as South Dakota remained unbeaten by humbling Indiana State. Streveler now has accounted for 25 touchdowns through six games. The Sycamores scored first on Jerry Nunez’s 35-yard field goal to cap a 13-play drive to open the game, but Streveler answered with the first of two touchdown passes to Brandt Van Roekel on the ensuing drive. Nunez converted from 20-yards out to cut the Coyotes’ lead to a single point, but Streveler found Van Roekel with a 55-yard strike to make it 14-6. South Dakota (6-0, 3-0 Missouri Valley) led 28-6 at intermission. Streveler completed 27 of 32 pass attempts for 337 yards.
Western Illinois 49, Missouri State 30
Sean McGuire threw three touchdown passes and Western Illinois came back from an eight-point halftime deficit to beat Missouri State 49-30 on Saturday in a game that was weather-delayed for nearly two hours late in the fourth quarter. McGuire had 249 yards passing. Steve McShane ran for 143 yards and a score, and Max Norris had 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns. After trailing 21-13 at halftime, McGuire brought Western Illinois back beginning with a 43-yard scoring pass to Isaiah LeSure to tie it 21-all. Jaelon Acklin took it 61 yards for another touchdown following a Missouri State field goal to put the Leathernecks (5-1, 2-1 Missouri Valley Conference) on top 28-24 with 5:02 left in the third.
